Scarifiers are used for aggressive concrete surface preparation, material removal and texturing. Unlike floor grinders, which smooth and refine surfaces, scarifiers are designed to cut into concrete to remove coatings, level high spots or create a roughened surface profile.
Bo’s Plant & Tool Hire supplies both light-duty and heavy-duty scarifiers, suitable for a wide range of concrete preparation and refurbishment applications.

Scarifiers
What Are They Used For?
Unlike floor grinders, which are used for smoothing, scarifiers are used when deeper surface correction is required. Their cutting action removes material quickly and creates a roughened surface that improves adhesion for coatings or overlays.
They are commonly used for:
- Removing thick paint, epoxy and coatings
- Levelling high spots on concrete slabs
- Preparing surfaces for resurfacing
- Creating textured, slip-resistant finishes
- Removing contamination from concrete floors
Scarifiers are often the preferred choice when the surface condition requires more than just light refinement.
Light-Duty Scarifier

Light-duty scarifiers are suited to smaller areas and less demanding preparation work. They are easier to handle and are commonly used for residential or light commercial applications where controlled surface removal is needed.
They are typically used for smaller slabs, driveways and general maintenance work.
Heavy-Duty Scarifiers

Heavy-duty scarifiers are designed for larger projects and more intensive surface preparation. They are capable of removing thicker layers of material and covering wider areas more efficiently.
These machines are commonly used on industrial floors, large commercial slabs and major refurbishment projects where productivity and deeper cutting are required.
Choosing The Right Surface Preparation Equipment
Scarifiers are best used when the goal is to remove material or significantly alter the surface profile. For smoother finishes or lighter preparation work, a floor grinder may be more suitable.
Selecting the correct machine depends on the condition of the concrete and the level of surface preparation required.
